I’d like to share with you a discernment practice that may help you when you sense that you’re at a turning point in your life but you’re not sure what direction to take. It’s a process called the Quaker Clearness Committee — a way of inviting others to help you gain greater clarity about future directions without having other peoples’ views imposed on you.
I had direct experience of this practice many years ago when a theology professor reached retirement age but was unsure whether to retire or to pursue one of several other possible (and new) directions in his life. He invited me, along with five other people, to join him for a ‘clearness gathering’ over an extended meal.
